Strong evidence shows that exposure and engagement with the natural world not only improve human wellbeing but can also help promote environmentally friendly behaviors. Human-nature relationships are at the heart of global agendas promoted by international organizations including the World Health Organization’s “One Health” and the United Nations “Ocean Decade.” These agendas demand collaborative multisector interdisciplinary efforts at local, national, and global levels. However, while global agendas highlight global goals for a sustainable world, developing science that directly addresses these agendas (...) from design through to delivery and outputs does not come without its challenges. In this article, we present the outcomes of international meetings between researchers, stakeholders, and policymakers from the United Kingdom and Brazil. We propose a model for interdisciplinary work under such global agendas, particularly the interface between One Health and the UN Ocean Decade and identify three priority research areas closely linked to each other: human-nature connection, conservation-human behavior, and implementation strategies. We also discuss a number of recommendations for moving forward. (shrink)

Até que ponto, porém, essa imagem não é obstáculo para compreender o Ensaio como um todo e o alcance de sua reflexão? A pergunta se impõe, porque não é claro o que o Ensaio pretende provar, uma vez que propõe quatro diferentes formulações de uma (...) prova que denomina evidente. Tampouco é claro, por isso mesmo, como pretende conduzir a demonstração segundo o método que denomina a posteriori. Para compreender o Ensaio, é necessário entender qual é o objetivo último da prova e o método de demonstração. Dessa investigação decorrem alguns pontos, de outro modo, insuspeitos: (1) Kant critica não apenas a concepção de espaço leibniziana, mas também princípios adotados pelos leibnizianos, em particular, o princípio de determinação completa como princípio de individuação para as coisas em geral; (2) o Ensaio propõe uma concepção inaudita de espaço absoluto como: conceito, radicado no corpo humano e primeiro fundamento das relações espaciais e de sua cognição; (3) assim entendido, o Ensaio kantiano mostra-se, do ponto de vista genético, estratégico para tornar compreensível a concepção, introduzida pela Estética Transcendental da Crítica da Razão Pura, de aparecimento (Erscheinung) como objeto indeterminado da intuição empírica. Transcendental Aesthetic and the 1768 Essay: Space and Complete Determination Abstract: It is common for secondary literature to reduce Kant's 1768 essay On the First Ground of the Difference of Regions in Space to an attack on the Leibnizian conception of relative space in defense of the Newtonian conception of absolute space. To what extent, however, is this picture an obstacle to understanding the essay as a whole and the scope of its reflection? The question arises because it is not clear what the essay intends to prove, since it proposes four different formulations of a proof that it calls evident. Nor is it clear, therefore, how Kant’s essay intends to conduct the demonstration according to its a posteriori method. To understand Kant's argument, it is necessary to determine the ultimate objective of his proof and his method of demonstration. Some otherwise unsuspected points arise from this investigation: (1) Kant criticizes not only the conception of relative space but also the Leibnizian principle of thoroughgoing determination as a principle of individuation for things in general; (2) Kant proposes an unprecedented conception of absolute space as a fundamental concept, rooted in the human body, as the first ground of spatial relations and its cognition; (3) the Kant’s essay appears, from a genetic point of view, strategic to make comprehensible the conception introduced by the Transcendental Aesthetics of the Critique of Pure Reason, of appearance as an indeterminate object of empirical intuition. SÍNTESE - Descartes ao compor o seu Discurso do Método nos apresenta os quatro preceitos do método que é o modo de bem conduzir a razão. Estes quatro preceitos, a evidência, a divisão, a condução em ordem dos pensamentos do simples ao complexo e por fim fazer as enumerações completas e revisões, são capazes, como instrumento, de levar seu espirita à conquista da verdade. Pois são regras fáceis que tomam impossível tomar o falso por verdadeiro. E são exatamente quatro porque (...) devem ser poucas as regras para de fato serem cumprídas. É neste sentido que este pequeno artigo desenvolve os quatro preceitos do Discurso do Método de Descartes. (shrink)

Je me propose d'examiner les paragraphes 18 et 19 de la deuxième partie des Prolégomènes. Bien que ces deux paragraphes ne constituent pas l'intégralité de la déduction transcendantale des Prolégomènes, ils ont une fonction essentielle dans la mesure où ils exposent l’argument entier in nuce. Ces deux sections établissent de façon claire que la doctrine de l'idéalisme critique, présentée dans la première partie des Prolégomènes comme un idéalisme qui ne supprime pas « l'existence de la chose qui apparaît », joue (...) un rôle indispensable dans la déduction transcendantale, qui est présentée dans la deuxième partie à partir de la distinction entre jugement de perception et jugement d'expérience. Propõe-se aqui, a partir do choque entrealgumas posições sobre a filosofia kantiana (sobretudo em Schopenhauer e em Schelling),antes do que uma resposta, articular alguns problemas em torno do “idealismo alemão”,procurando pensar, assim, tanto a ambigüidade deste recorte como operador heurísticoquanto a abertura possível para um campo de questões sobre a atividade filosófica e o seu(não) fundamento.

Tanıtımını yapacağımız “Ezilenlerin Pedagojisi” adlı bu eser Brezilyalı yazar Paulo Freire’nin uluslarası alanda ün kazanmasına vesile olan meşhur kitabıdır. Onun bu kitabı eğitimin toplumu dönüştürücü gücüne işaret etmesi ve eğitimin toplumu yeniden şekillendirmede nasıl bir rol oynadığına dikkat çekmesi ile öne çıkmıştır. Kitap eğitim, din, siyaset gibi kurumları dolaylı olarak konu edinmesi ile eğitim sosyolojisi, din sosyolojisi, kurumlar sosyolojisinin alanlarına dâhil edilebilecek bir çalışma olarak değerlendirilebilir. Günümüz toplumlarının yapısına dair kendi toplumu üzerinden etkili çözümlemelerde bulunması, kültürel istilaya ve kapitalist (...) işgale karşı yerel olanın uyandırılması için öneriler getirmesi kitabın eğitimle ilgili sancılar yaşayan Türk akademik camiasında da okunmasını gerekli kılmaktadır. Freire, eğitim süreçlerinde yeni bir kendilik bilinci edinen ve kendilerini içinde buldukları sosyal duruma eleştirel bakmaya başlayanların pek çok durumda onlara bu katılım imkânını vermeyen toplumu dönüştürmek üzere harekete geçtiklerini kendi tecrübeleri ile deneyimlemiştir. Ezilenlerin Pedagojisi bu tecrübelerini sistematize ederek çözüm önerileriyle okuyucuya sunduğu bir çalışmadır. Her ne kadar arka planda yazarın ideolojik görüşlerinin varlığı hissedilse de reel politik ve insana dair psikolojik dinamikleri akademik bir lisanla analiz etmesi yönüyle okuyucuya zengin bir içerik sunan çalışma okunması gerekli metinler arasındadır. For those to whom John Bowring's name means anything, the most likely association with it is the complex and question-begging term ‘Benthamite’. Contemporaries certainly used the term, particularly when they wanted to suggest that his actions were narrowly ideological or theoretical. But to some of Bowring's contemporaries another association served hostile intent almost as well: his Unitarianism.

In this paper an attempt is made to provide an analysis of the meaning of the term function and related terms as they are used by R. K. Merton in the first chapter of his book Social Theory and Social Structure. Several problems are suggested which must be solved if statements about functions are to be considered scientifically adequate. Secondly the term functionalism is defined and several of Merton's functionalist explanations of social phenomena are stated and criticized.

The World Medical Association’s revised Declaration of Helsinki endorses the view that all trial participants in every country are entitled to the worldwide best standard of care. In this paper the authors show that this requirement has been rejected by every national and international committee that has examined this issue. They argue that the consensus view now holds that it is ethically permissible, in some circumstances, to provide research participants less than the worldwide best care. This paper introduces the medical factual matrix as a new and potentially valuable tool in medical ethical analysis. Using this tool it demonstrates the idea that a defined medical intervention can only be meaningfully declared futile in relation to a defined goal of treatment. It argues that a declaration of futility made solely in relation to a defined medical intervention is inchoate. It recasts the definition of goal futility as an intervention that cannot alter the probability of the existence of (...) the important outcome states that might flow from a defined intervention. The idea of value futility and the extent of physician obligations in futile situations are also addressed. It also examines the source of substantive conflicts which commonly arise within the doctor-patient relationship and the ensuing power relations that operate between doctor and patient when questions of futility arise. The theoretical framework adopted in the exact sciences, for constructing and testing deterministic theories on the one hand, and modelling and analysis of observed phenomena on the other, is often implicitly assumed to be that of structural stability. In view of recent developments in nonlinear dynamics, it is argued here that in general it may not be possible to assume strict determinism and structural stability simultaneously; either strict determinism holds, in which case the fragility framework may turn out to be (...) the appropriate framework for the study of certain phenomena in the exact sciences, or ‘structural stability’ is restored at the expense of introducing stochasticity. In this sense a certain degree of indeterminacy may be unavoidable even at the classical level. (shrink)

Contemporary appeals for a deepening of civic friendship in liberal democracies often draw on Aristotle. This paper warns against a certain kind of attempt to use Aristotle in our own theorising, namely accounts of civic friendship that characterise it as similar in some way to Aristotelian virtue friendship. The most prominent of these attempts have focused on disinterested mutual regard as a basic ingredient in all Aristotelian forms of friendship. The argument against this is that it inadequately accounts for the (...) idea of a virtue friend as another self, which we find in Aristotle’s thought. When we attend closely to that, we see that civic friendship is different in a fundamental way from virtue friendship because virtue friends are keenly committed to the moral improvement of one another. It is argued that Aristotle does not see civic friendship in the same way. However, if this argument about the differences between the forms of friendship cannot be accepted, the paper argues that we should not draw on Aristotle for an understanding of civic friendship because any similarity it might have to virtue friendship would license illiberal interventions in the lives of citizens in service of some idea of moral improvement. A seeming connection between Aristotelian civic friendship and thick conceptions of citizenship is replaced with a connection between it and thinner conceptions. (shrink)
